Building a Better Public Sector in Bangladesh
As Bangladesh’s governance demands grow, we help public institutions improve coordination, accountability, and service delivery for all citizens.
As Bangladesh approaches graduation from Least Developed Country status, its public institutions are under growing pressure to deliver effective services, coordinate across agencies, and respond to increasingly complex governance demands.
The Building State Effectiveness and Accountability in Bangladesh program, funded by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office, supports government institutions to improve policy implementation, strengthen accountability, and deliver services more effectively. Its adaptive, locally grounded approach supports reforms that are politically feasible, practical to implement, and more likely to endure within Bangladesh’s governance system.
Impact
OUR APPROACH
The program works with government officials and institutions to eliminate operational bottlenecks, strengthen public financial management, and improve administrative performance. The program combines adaptive management approaches, such as Problem Driven Iterative Adaptation, Thinking and Working Politically, and locally led problem solving to support reforms that are politically feasible, operationally practical, and sustainable within Bangladesh’s governance context.
By simultaneously supporting individual reform champions and institutional systems, the program aims to strengthen public administration, improve inter-agency coordination, enhance accountability mechanisms, and support more effective public service delivery aligned with Bangladesh’s national reform agenda.
The program works with the government in two mutually reinforcing ways.
Action-driven partnerships connect individual officials across institutions and with actors from outside the government to collaboratively diagnose operational challenges and test practical solutions to policy and service delivery problems.
Institutional support provides tailored technical support to government bodies seeking to strengthen their internal systems, coordination mechanisms, and policy implementation processes.
