Fostering Supportive Reading Environments
Across the Pacific, we help children and families access local-language stories that strengthen reading, belonging, and community dialogue.
Let’s Read Pacific uses locally created children’s storybooks as a platform for literacy, community engagement, and dialogue across the Pacific region.
The program supports the creation of Pacific-authored and illustrated books that reflect local languages, cultures, and everyday experiences while expanding access to culturally grounded reading materials for children and families. Working with schools, libraries, civil society organizations, and communities, the program supports read-aloud activities and discussions on issues including tolerance, civic values, peacebuilding, and community belonging, while also strengthening Pacific creative industries and local storytelling.
Impact
More than 12,000 books distributed across five Pacific countries. A recent regional initiative that focused on religious freedom and tolerance distributed thousands of books.
Community materials and read-aloud activities supported dialogue on tolerance, civic values, peacebuilding, and justice while strengthening community engagement and literacy promotion.
The program supported the creation of more than 50 locally authored and illustrated children’s books that reflect Pacific languages, cultures, and community experiences.
Let’s Read Digital Library
Free and accessible to anyone with a phone or internet connection, the Let’s Read digital Library makes nearly 11,000 titles in more than 75 languages available to every classroom and household.
OUR APPROACH
What distinguishes Let’s Read Pacific is its use of children’s literature as a practical entry point for social and behavioral change. Stories are developed by Pacific authors and illustrators and paired with community engagement activities that help connect concepts such as tolerance, nonviolence, and civic learning to daily life and local realities. This flexible and localized model allows the platform to support multiple development objectives while remaining community-driven and culturally resonant.
