Let’s Read: Building a Culture of Reading in Mongolia
As Mongolia works to strengthen early learning, we help families, teachers, authors, and government expand access to books and build lasting reading habits.
Early literacy is critical to children’s long-term learning, yet many families have limited access to high-quality children’s books and reading support. Let’s Read Mongolia works with educators, families, authors, and government to strengthen reading habits while improving early childhood development.
The program combines children’s book publishing, community reading promotion, teacher training, and policy engagement to build a sustainable reading ecosystem. By strengthening both the supply and demand for quality children’s literature, it helps embed reading into homes, schools, and national education policies.
Impact
Expanded Mongolia’s digital children’s library to more than 250 Mongolian-language books
Reached more than 99,000 parents and caregivers through reading campaigns
Engaged 11,000+ children in Storytime activities nationwide
Trained 7,000+ kindergarten teachers in reading aloud techniques and integrating children’s books into learning activities
APPROACH
Implemented since 2021 with funding from the Lorinet Foundation, the Let’s Read Mongolia project aims to improve literacy and numeracy outcomes for primary school children in Mongolia. The program focuses on increasing access to high-quality children’s books, strengthening understanding of the importance of early reading, encouraging positive reading habits, and improving policies that promote reading to young children.
Key partners include Ger Urguu NGO, working in target ger communities, and Mongolian Education Alliance, supporting the evaluation of community children’s learning. This comprehensive strategy to improve early childhood development in Mongolia is creating a broad coalition of supporters of reading across the country.
